Favicons: Those little icons set you apart...

Andrew Conniff - Wednesday, August 24, 2011

What is a favicon anyway?

A favicon is the little icon that appears in the top of a web page right by the title.

Just like the Facebook "f" you can make your own favicon and add it to your pages. The general rule for icons is that they should be 16 by 16 (pixels) and saved as a .ico file. Many programs make great logo programs, but will not convert to the .ico format. The good news is that there are many online converters. I like iconverticons because you get a variety of sizes and even can get windows and Mac system icons.

Adding a favicon to your website.

If your website uses templates, you can add the code to the master templates and it will appear in all of the pages that use the template. If your website does not use templates you will have to add the code to each page.

Add this code before the /head> tag, I usually put it right after the <title></title> tages like so:

 <head>
<title>Home page</title>
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" />
    </head>

The /favicon.ico part is your icon file. I usually just name it favicon.ico and upload it to the root folder,.but you can save it as whatever name you want, just make sure you change it in the code as wellAlso, don't forget the / at the beginning or you will have problems.

Feel free to post links of your site with your favicon!
